The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends each muscle group receive resistance exercise a minimum of twice per week.

- Free weights- are things such as barbells and dumbbells
- Surgical tubing- also known as resistance bands, essentially are big rubber bands
- Calisthenics- are body weight exercises such as jumping jacks and pushups
- Plyometrics- are done with body weight but is where the body loads, and propels itself such as jump squats, plyo-pushups
- Isometrics- are exercises where the muscles tense but don't actually move such as planks
- Machines- there are various types of machines that apply various types of resistance
